Meet Andrea Lanfri, First Multiple Amputee to climb Everest

Andrea Lanfri (Lucca) is an Italian Paralympic athlete and mountaineer born on 26 November 1986.

In January 2015, he contracted meningitis with meningococcal sepsis, which caused him to lose both legs and seven fingers and much of the mobility of the latter. Initially operated on in Florence, he was then transferred to the S. Luca hospital in Lucca, where he remained for the entire period.

As per Wikipedia, Lanfri made his national team debut, obtaining a new Italian record and the bronze medal in the 4×100 m relay in 2016.

In July 2016, in Berlin, Andrea achieved the minimum required in the 400m for the XV Paralympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016 but was surprisingly not called up for the event.

In Rome, during the Golden Gala, he set another record with 11.48″ in the 100m.

Lanfri participated in the 2017 World Paralympic Athletics Championships, winning the silver medal in the 4x100m relay. He also set a new Italian record with 11.46″ in the 100m and secured a fifth-place finish with 22.51″ (wind -0.1 m/s) in the 200m.

In total, he clinched 9 Italian titles in various races. Since the spring of 2018, he has been representing FISPES with the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Azzurre.

Additionally, in year 2019, he announced his decision in June to withdraw from athletics competitions, redirecting his focus entirely to mountain activities.

In July 2017, he re-entered the world of free climbing, a sport he engaged in before his illness. This was made possible by the support of sponsors who facilitated the creation of prostheses tailored for the activity. He chose to ascend a peak in Corsica that he had previously conquered before his illness, referring to the climb as Operation Coming Back To Life.

In September 2018, he ascended the Cima Grande di Lavaredo, reaching an elevation of 2,999 meters above sea level, in a roped party with his girlfriend Natascia and his friend Giacomo. The chosen ascent route was the Spigolo Dibona.

In June 2019, he commenced the climb of Monte Rosa, subsequently continuing towards Finisterre, covering the entire route of Santiago by bike, pedaling 8-9 hours a day. Additionally, in October of the same year, he embarked on his first Himalayan expedition in Nepal, achieving his first 7,000-meter summit on 10/26/2019 at Puntha Hiunchiuli in Dolpo, at 7,246 meters above sea level.

During the summer of 2020, he undertook the “Five Peaks” project with his friend Massimo Coda, conquering five Italian peaks: Marmolada, Gran Paradiso, Monviso, Cervino, and Mont Blanc. Again, in 2021, alongside Massimo, they completed the entire crossing of the Monte Rosa massif, starting from Gressoney up to Cervinia.
